The word "faggot" has several meanings, and also different spellings. In the sense you quote, it means "pieces of wood" so the sentence means that someone (female) who was going to be martyred (killed for her beliefs, most likely religious beliefs) had to place the pieces of wood which would then be set alight and she would be burnt to death. Unfortunately in human history, we humans have often been unspeakably cruel to each other - "burning at the stake" was a common way of killing people who were found "guilty" of crimes such as having a different religion. This was common practice in Europe in the Middle Ages; one of the most famous victims was Joan of Arc, burnt in the French city of Rouen by the English invaders. A person would be tied to an upright large piece of wood, a "stake". Around the bottom of the stake would be placed wood and the whole thing would be set on fire, burning the wood and the person with it.
