she had taught her owners above a bit

Fan was a sedate and disillusioned dog. She knew the world as it was, and in learning it she had taught her owners above a bit  (A larger context is here.)

Please explain 'she had taught her owners above a bit'.  Thanks.  --- tk

I think it's another way of saying she taught her owners a lot. Above a bit = more than a bit. Not a little.
Like saying not bad = good. There's a name for that figure of speech but it eludes me.
