second film with
« on: September 16, 2013, 03:22:20 am »
1-'The Graduate' was his second film with Anne Bancroft.
2-'The Graduate' was his second film, with Anne Bancroft.

It seems to me that 1 is saying that 'The Graduate' was the second film in which he and Anne Bancroft had roles.
2 on the other hand seems to be saying that 'The Graduate' was his second film and that Anne Bancroft was in it as well.

2 does not really seem natural to me though. Is it correct?

Am I correct?

You are right about 1.
I would paraphrase the other sentence:
2-'The Graduate'(,) with Anne Bancroft(,) was his second film.
I think the commas are optional but they may help. If you use them you need both.

If it's not used by a native speaker it's not idiomatic. And idiom trumps grammar every time. Jack Wilkerson†
