Title: Fires in Australia
Post by: Bertha on January 04, 2020, 02:18:57 pm
I am sure you've all seen the news about the devastation created by wildfires burning in Australia.  Darryl assures me that he and his wife are safe an away from them.  I saw this page on Facebook, and found it informative and how it illustrates its wide range of effects beyond Australia.  Satellite Images Show Australia's Devastating Wildfires From Space https://nasaspxa.com/2020/01/04/satellite-images-show-australias-devastating-wildfires-from-space/ via @nasaspxa71

Yes, the fires here are catastrophic, and I thank Bertha for her concern. I see on the news this morning that even new Zealand is suffering from the effects of our smoke.
Here in far North Queensland, we are spared the ferocity of the southern fires which are more like fire tornadoes as they sweep across the crowns of the trees. The eucalypt oils are so volatile that the trees literally explode, and fires like that consume everything in their path. High winds and 40+ temperatures add to the unpredictability of the fires and the ember attacks which cause so much loss of property.
We do have bushfires up here of course, and properties have been lost, but not on the same scale as our people in NSW, Victoria and SA. Even Kangaroo Island off the SA coast is burning. We normally only make the news up here for cyclonic conditions.
The military forces have now been deployed to help with evacuations and the navy are using ships to rescue people who are stranded on beaches in southern NSW. One paper headlined it as Dunkirk Down Under, in typical journalistic enthusiasm. I imagine the newspapers all over the world are reporting on this. Not doing much for our tourism industry!
But it will end. The rain will come eventually. Thank you for thinking of us.

Of course we do. Like millions of other folks around the world with a myriad of different problems. I count my blessings in Shropshire day by day.

I pray for your safety, Darryl, and the rest of the Australians. I'd been to Sydney and Blue Mountains in 2018, and I'm saddened to hear what's happening to your beautiful country.   :'(

Core of my heart, my country,
Land of the rainbow gold.
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back three-fold.

Very sad what is happening in Australia. reminds me of a song though

Out where the river broke
The bloodwood and the desert oak
Holden wrecks and boiling diesels
Steam in forty-five degrees

How do we sleep while our beds are burning?

The time has come, a fact's a fact
It belongs to them, let's give it back

It has been a long time since I visited this forum, but I want Darryl to know that I, too, have been thinking about him and all his Aussie compatriots. Sadly, I have never had the opportunity to visit Australia, but have known people there and am a Facebook friend with a former exchange student from there. I simply cannot imagine the ferocity and devastation of the bushfires. Best wishes for a change in the weather!

Dave, thank you for your good wishes. This past few days has seen some good rainfall (and floods) across much of the fireground. There are creeks running that haven't had water for five years.

Hooray!  Hooray!  I saw some photos of people dancing in the rain as they rejoiced!

Great news about the rains!

Another aspect that has been in the press here in Britain is the devastating effects on the wildlife and how some species may take decades to recover.

Yes, it's been tough on wildlife. Koalas have taken a real hit.
