Title: What is the Weather like Where You Are?
Post by: Writing Skill on June 19, 2015, 05:27:48 am
The temperature is 70 degrees with 100% humidity. It's been like this for about a week. There is a flash flood watch, and the Mississippi River is due to crest tomorrow.

Midwinter, today's temp about 25 degrees C, nil wind, blue skies. Nice to see some blue after about two weeks of mist, wind and drizzle up here in the mountains. Approaching the shortest day of the year... dark at about now 6.30pm and comes light at about the same time am. I don't know how people could survive in those deep north or south latitudes where they have so much darkness in winter. Give me light! I met an American photographer once who was on a photo shoot here. He reckoned Australia was 'two stops overexposed'. (Photographers will understand that terminology)

Changes are again coming to Oklahoma. We just had a lot of rainfall from the remnants of a tropical storm, that is now moving east--probably what WS is experiencing now.  Several areas in southern Oklahoma are underwater with flooding, and the heavy rains also caused rock slides along the major north-south interstate highway adding more trouble because traffic has had to be rerouted to allow for rock removal.  The storms have left, but now the summer sun will raise the temperatures into the 90s (30s C.) along with humidity in the drying out process.  I am so glad that all the work on our AC system is complete--we are ready for the heat now!

About 20°C in Germany, cloudy but mostly dry with some drizzle in-between. Approaching the longest day of the year, which at my latitude, means 16.5 hours daylight (5am-9:30 pm). In comparison the shortest day of the year has  about 8 hours (8am-4pm).

The dark winter is the price for a magnificent day length in summer. I've bee to the North Cape a few years ago in summer when it doesn't get dark all night long.

Daryl,
I spent one year in Fort Greely Alaska, and you are right about deep north latitudes. It is frigid in the winter and the nights go on forever, and it can be depressing. But, I am an outdoors man, so I thrived in that seeming desolation, but there are periods of darkness that last for months.
The Sun comes up, but it remains on the horizon, or it rises for a few hours, and then it slips away.
One day I would love to see NZ, or Scotland, but it is only a wish. I am pretty old now, and I am glad that I managed to see Alaska and Germany.

If you're an outdoors man, MM, then maybe Australia would suit you fine.  8) Lots of wilderness here and not as cold as Alaska.

During WW-II, my ship stopped at Reykjavik, Iceland on several occasions during the winter months. At first I found the darkness depressing; however, as soon as I settled down and established a daily routine, the place became friendly. I believe a person can adjust to any environment. It is a state of mind……………….cheers……….GG

The temperature is 70 degrees with 100% humidity. It's been like this for about a week. There is a flash flood watch, and the Mississippi River is due to crest tomorrow.

Talking of weather, we'd be camping out in the hottest place on earth— Death Valley, CA.

Although this time of year could hardly bring in 134 F  (56.67 C) temps, the forecast would be in mid 70s (21 C) for the next three or four days. We will spend a week or two in this desolate place—our motor home would be fully stocked with food and water.

November through April is usually recommended for visitors to this tourist spot. Some adventurous dudes would dare outside this time frame however.

Deadly high temperature in mid summer is not too good to be in this area-- except locals who live and work here.

I drove thru Death Valley once years ago. One factoid I remember is that all canned goods had to be removed during the summer months because of fear of exploding....................................GG

Welcome, sarwanov. Can't recall that we've ever had a weather report from Kurdistan.
It's very hot and stormy here in North Queensland - lightning strikes nearby. I probably should not have the computer on. Hmmm.

Here in southern England, after a week of heavy frosts and clear skies, it warmed up over the weekend a bit, although there was a light frost this morning. Now, however, some weather forecasters are saying we'll have a "white Easter". (Easter is early this year, the 27th of March.)

The biggest concern for me was one hundred percent humidity and I know this was more than most of us had been through before. But things had gone well and easy after the warning. Stay blessed all my folks.

It would appear that summer has come and gone. Last week, after a very miserably chilly April, including several occurrences of snow falling (little flakes only, which didn't settle, but snow nonetheless) during the last week of April, once May got going, things improved to the point that this past weekend saw brilliantly warm, indeed hot, as Duncan alludes to, weather. Sadly, it is cooler today and we now have a weather warning for heavy rain tomorrow here in the south.

Lots of friends here - some with very dark expressions this morning. Our wet season (such as it was) is over, but it seems to have degenerated into useless drizzle. We need proper rain. Stlll warm (30) even though winter is just around the corner.

David ---  Where are you?

We are having an unusually hot summer here in Seoul.  For the past four weeks, I counted 22 days with high above 32 deg C, 24 days with low above 25 deg C, which we call tropical nights.  And the forecast is that we will have more.  They say it's a record heat since 1994, the year I spent in AZ, USA.  The dry heat in AZ was not so bad, allowing me play golf in 47 deg C.  --- tk

The entire coastal region and some parts inland are under feet of flood water in Texas.  A good friend in Galveston keeps providing updates from where he lives; he survived Hurricane Ike a few years ago but lost his house then.  He rebuilt and his house is now much better.  All the living space is up, sixteen feet from the ground and the lot the house sits on is about six feet higher than the lowest part--the street.  Even so, Galveston is much better off than the area around Houston, which was flooded everywhere. Some small towns such as Rockport and Port Arthur took the early brunt of the hurricane, and many, many structures were destroyed from the winds.  Lots of relief efforts underway. Oklahoma has sent down National Guard troops to help with rescues, and various companies such as the Oklahoma Electric and Gas are there to help with various restoration projects.  Many areas are without electrical power, so OGE will work hard to help get it back.  The evacuations continue and rescue centers are filling up.  One of the local mega-churches finally opened its doors to evacuees.  Some people have been bused to places such as Dallas, about three hours away, where they can be cared for.  Some people were from New Orleans and moved to Houston after Hurricane Katrina.  It's a mess, but it does bring out the best in people.  Now, if we could help those in India and the South Pacific who are being flooded.

The British Isles have suffered not one but two hurricanes in recent weeks. Neither was as severe as those that devastated the Caribbean and the US, however. The first hit Ireland the worst, killing three people and causing lots of damage. It also brought Sahara dust and smoke from wildfires in Spain and Portugal, which caused a very strange red sun even at midday. The second hit parts of the western portion of England but was not as strong as was originally forecast.

As I write this, we have another day of gloomy, murky skies, and mild temperatures for this time of year: daytime highs in the upper teens, nighttime lows still in double figures. Thus it feels warm (sort of) but very damp.

We are preparing for a "polar vortex" to drop our temperatures into the teens with wind chill "feel like" temps into single digits (Fahrenheit that is). At the same time, we have a storm system that will either produce a few snow flurries or dump a bunch on Oklahoma as it moves eastward toward Washington, DC.  We need to dump something there, which isn't snow, but rhymes.

We have had an unusually wet winter with lots of rain. We may have drought this coming summer!  At the moment, much of the eastern half of the US is having a rough spell of subzero temperatures, the coldest in decades, and lots of blizzards.  Here in Oklahoma, our temperatures have dipped but not as bad as places such as Chicago, Atlanta, and New York City and everywhere in between. Brrrrr.

I saw some TV footage of Chicago, Bertha. They were urging people to stay indoors and if they go outside not to breathe the cold air deeply because you can get frostbite. That sounds a bit odd to me but maybe it's true. I have no experience with such low temps.

Yes, it's terribly cold right now in Chicago and other locations up in the northern states and eastward.  And, yes, at those temperatures, it is possible to get frostbite internally if one breathes deeply.  I know when I was a kid, growing up in New York State, we had some very cold times, but being kids, we would go outdoors anyway.  It was a common feeling to have the inside of one's nose feel frozen momentarily when breathing in.  Any moisture instantly froze.  Imagine if it got down into the lungs!  In other words, today is not one to go out for a run around the track.
