---- broken cast
« on: February 19, 2021, 03:19:05 am »
If Louise had stayed I should never have
loved Helen: I would never have been black-mailed by Yu-
sef, never have committed that act of despair. I would have
been myself still the same self that lay stacked in fifteen
years of diaries, not this broken cast. But, of course, he told
himself, it's only because I have done these things that suc-
cess comes.
(from The Heart of the Matter, by Graham Greene; a larger context is here; use ctrl-f to locate the sentence)

Please explain "broken cast".  Thanks.  --- tk

He is no longer what he would have liked to have been; what he thinks he might have been.
Best wishes,

Thanks, Duncan.  So "cast" hear means "A stroke of fortune or fate; a lot"?  Thanks again.  --- tk

Think of cast iron or casting a statue etc. It means a shadow of himself.
Best wishes,

This might help to explain "cast" in the context you have.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost-wax_casting
