so many times that
« on: September 15, 2020, 11:55:56 pm »
Which are correct:

1) We want to score so many times that our rivals just give up.
2) We want to score so many times that our rivals will just give up.

3) We wanted to score so many times that our rivals just gave up.

4) We wanted to score so many times that our rivals would just give up.

Is there any difference in the meanings of '1' and '2'?
How about the meanings of '3' and '4'?

Gratefully,
Navi

1) We want to score so many times that our rivals just give up.
Correct. Could be talking about a present game or one in the (near) future.

2) We want to score so many times that our rivals will just give up.
Correct. Could be talking about a game that is happening at the moment or one in the future. More probably in the future but it could be either - depends on context.

3) We wanted to score so many times that our rivals just gave up.
Correct. But it probably didn't happen. Context again.

4) We wanted to score so many times that our rivals would just give up.
Correct. It may have happened or that may have been the plan. Context again.

Just remember - tenses often do not give a time. It is the context that is crucial.
Best wishes,
