Learning something new every day
« on: February 08, 2014, 12:40:11 am »
For the sake of good influence, you are invited to share what new things you have learned today.  What you learned before are not counted here.

I have learned today the English name of this thing:

It is called spirit level or bubble level.

BTW, I think that learning only ONE new thing a day is too little learning.

My second new thing I learn today is what is meant by throwing a pot on a potter's wheel.  Wish I could do that; I would make many pots for my flowers.

It has been raining all day at my place (which is good), so I couldn't work outside. I started up my blacksmith forge and after reading a 'how to' section of a forum, I made my first ram's head fire poker. I had to learn a few new things to do it and I was quite pleased with my effort. After I have done a few more I'll probably look back on it and think 'That's pretty ordinary'.
And how did the pot go, Bertha? My wife does pottery and I've watched her throw pots on the wheel. I've had a go, but they always seem to just start looking good and then get the wobbles.
Nice spirit level, JTL. I see you have the advanced model with 45 indicator and plumb.

I didn't actually get my hands on learning experience--I am part of an interview committee to select a new faculty person to teach art at my college.  Part of the interview is a teaching demonstration, and because the new faculty person will have to teach a variety of things, including ceramics, showing/explaining/teaching how to throw a pot is required.  She explained how easy it is to get the wobbles--it has to do with keeping even pressure with your hands as the wheel spins.  Just a tiny bit of uneven pressure can cause a wobble to occur.  She said she requires students to make 100 columns on the wheel, just to get the basics of throwing a pot!  Good it take you that many tries to get your poker!

I learned today that I shouldn't keep bananas in the refrigerator because they lose their "banana" taste. If I keep them at room temperature, they turn out great.....................................GG

When you buy bananas, put them in a plastic bag. Don't seal it or anything, but they will not ripen as fast as when you leave them out in the open air.

There used to be a song "never ever ever put bananas in the refrigerator!" It worked so that "ever" rhymed with "refrigerator".

Are you sure, Dave? Seems to me that refrigerator rhymes with equator.  :)

I learned

1. that spirit level is called that because of the fluid in it is alcohol and
2. that bannanas lose unripe taste completely only when they look almost spoiled outside. (Do you agree?)

TK:

That is a good idea. My bananas always taste so raw.  Next time I will leave out until they are brown before I put them in my morning cereal.........Thanks for the tip................................GG
