---- would not grow up
« on: April 17, 2019, 04:08:18 am »
The least that would have satisfied Christina was to have been told that there never yet had been any parents comparable to Theobald and herself.  She did not feel easy that an alliance of some kind would not grow up between aunt and nephew, and neither she nor Theobald wanted Ernest to have any allies.  (from THE WAY OF ALL FLESH, by Samuel Butler; a larger context is here; use ctrl-f to locate the sentence)

Since "She" did not want such an alliance, I would feel better if "would not grow up" had been "would grow up".  Is the latter wrong?  Thanks.  --- tk

The double negative makes a positive. So, she felt this might happen, though she did not feel happy about the prospect.
Best wishes,

These double negative things make my head spin.
I can see Tk's reasoning.
If the subject alliance was not wanted, she would not feel easy that it would grow up.
I'm confused too.
