---- paint Academy pictures, or write for the Times
« on: April 17, 2019, 03:57:54 am »
“Of course,” she had said to me, more than once, “I shall make a mess of it.  I shall choose some nice-looking, well-dressed screw, with gentlemanly manners which will take me in, and he will go and paint Academy pictures, or write for the Times, or do something just as horrid the moment the breath is out of my body.”  (from THE WAY OF ALL FLESH, by Samuel Butler; a larger context is here; use ctrl-f to locate the sentence)

1. I guess that "Academy pictures" are paintings for schools such as portraits of teachers and graduates.  Am I right?
2. Why is writing for the Times considered horrid?

Thanks.  --- tk

I'll try an opinion without having read the book.

For some rebellious people what most would call a "decent job" is the epitome of middle-class narrow-mindedness, bourgeois, and to be avoided at all cost.
If it's not used by a native speaker it's not idiomatic. And idiom trumps grammar every time. Jack Wilkerson†
