---- hacking it home
« on: December 06, 2018, 06:32:59 am »
At that moment she had been feeling an extraordinary hatred and contempt for her husband. All the morning and all the afternoon she had been lying there thinking that Edward and the girl were together—in the field and hacking it home at dusk. She had been digging her sharp nails into her palms.  (from The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford; a larger context is here; use ctrl-f to locate the sentence)

Please explain "hacking it home".  Thanks.  --- tk

Not sure.
Hacking can refer to horse riding so, maybe, they rode their horses home at dusk.
But, as I say, I am not sure.
Best wishes,

Hack can also refer to a hackney cab, so maybe they were going home by that transportation means.
