---- I committed suicide in the Seine
« on: September 06, 2017, 02:21:56 am »
It's all his fault that I committed suicide in the Seine ... Why are you
laughing? Don't you believe that I committed suicide?
(from Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller; a larger context is here; use ctrl-f to locate the sentence)

Please explain "I committed suicide".  I thought it implied that I died.  Do the listeners laugh because it's an error?  But I supposed that she was speaking in French because this is in Paris with the listeners from the US and the speaker from Russia, all living in Paris for some time.  Thanks.  --- tk

Strange. Obviously the first sentence is ridiculous. I must be missing something - I don't see what the writer/speaker is getting at. Your guess is as good as ours, tk.
