Twenty or thirty china animals stood on brackets and shelves, together with slots of deer, brushes of foxes, pads of otters, a horse's hoof, and other animal trophies; a low, bronchial growl came from under the bed. Please explain "slots of deer" as animal trophies.  Thanks.  --- tk

I imagine that 'slots' refers to the cloven foot of the deer. Maybe they are actual feet of trophy deer or plaster casts of the prints left in soft ground.
